 | Neverwhere | | Sink down into London Below... | Rating: | |
|
Neil Gaiman's 'Neverwhere' stars Richard Mayhew, an unsuspecting, ordinary man. That is, until he helps a girl on the street and is plunged into a new world; a dark, sinister London that has some semblance to the city above it. Richard is charged with protecting Door, an orphan with no extended family, on the run from brutal assassins. A native of London Below. Gaiman's tale is both funny and darkly compelling; his characters are rich and real. At points in the story, laughing feels rather inappropriate -- similar to the initial snort when someone trips before you check they're okay -- but Gaiman writes in such a way that leaves you no choice. 'Neverwhere' was my introduction to Gaiman's works and I have never been more glad of taking a literary risk. Warning: Can be quite violent.
