Morrigan's Cross
morrigans-cross-medium.jpg'Morrigan's Cross' is the first in Nora Roberts's apocalyptic Circle trilogy.

Rating:

Sent into the future by the Gods, Hoyt Mac Cionaoith is charged with an impossible mission. Reunite with a brother he no longer knows and four complete strangers to fight an enemy he can't match alone. The enemy is the vampire named Lillith. With a millenium to build her army and a hatred for humans, Lillith is the most powerful and ancient vampire. The only thing standing in her way is Hoyt and the circle of six.

Nora Roberts completely outdoes herself with this trilogy. There is more focus on the plot than in her previous works, though her characters are far from suffering from the lack of attention. Hoyt is strong and silent; and the dynamic between him and his estranged brother is palpable. The dynamic between Hoyt, a 13th century sorcerer, and Glenna, an independent, modern witch is also cleverly written. Their magic, both figurative and literal, fair sizzles off the page. For me, the Circle trilogy is far more than a bit of light, fluffy reading and could very well prove a turning point in Nora Roberts's works.
